Совершив несколько смелых ограблений, он оказывается за решеткой. Выйдя на свободу, он плетет интриги, чтобы занять место телохранителя, а затем и ближайшего помощника одного знаменитого гангстера. После смерти босса он без зазрения совести начинает вымогать деньги из его основных партнеров, будучи прекрасно осведомлен о каждом их шаге (с любовницей одного он в связи). Он выбрасывает из окна Морана, который намеренно покалечил его брата так, что тот на всю жизнь остался инвалидом. После возвращения из Европы, куда Ногастый ездил, чтобы порадовать жену, и где все время проводил в кинотеатрах, глядя хронику о сухом законе, судьба начинает поворачиваться к нему спиной. Синдикат, объединивший отныне гангстеров США, дает ему отпор; из-за поднятой шумихи имя Ногастого слишком часто попадает на страницы газет. Его жена пьет и просит, чтобы ее убили, ― только так она сможет очиститься от позора своей любви к нему. Она уходит от Ногастого. Даймонд находит бывшую любовницу босса, которая была некогда и его любовницей. Она возвращается к нему – но лишь затем, чтобы стащить у него револьвер. Даймонд умирает безоружным.► История восхождения Даймонда описана Беттикером при помощи коротких, очень компактных, очень изобретательных эпизодов, выстроенных в нервном, наэлектризованном ритме. Автор необычайно чутко использует прием умолчания, который на редкость эффективно повышает градус зрительского интереса. Действия и поступки гангстера, временно неуязвимого благодаря своему невежеству, чванству и безжалостной жестокости, описаны с язвительным юмором. Если нужно устранить соперника в любви, он отдавливает ему ногу мусорным ящиком. Если надо выиграть танцевальный конкурс, он поджигает платье партнерши самого опасного конкурента. Беттикер показывает все, на что способен, и в этом ему помогает очень резкий операторский стиль, лишающий изображение и действие всякой двусмысленности. Нуар отжил свое, и Беттикер оставляет позади этот жанр и его смертоносные хитросплетения. Он предпочитает четкое, сухое, документальное изложение. К сожалению, в последней части фильма, посвященной падению гангстера, режиссер отходит от этого стиля и этого юмора, которые так замечательно ему у давались. Поскольку в первой половине картины Даймонд описывается как пустой человек, огромный мыльный пузырь, мы ожидаем, что во второй половине он лопнет и это будет показано с такой же точностью и интонационной силой. Однако Беттикер захотел сыграть на тон выше ― стремясь добиться трагической серьезности, которая совсем ему не подходит. Тем самым он впадает в пафос. Желая расширить образ главного героя, сделать его объемнее, автор добивается лишь того, что образ этот, до сих пор точный и убедительный, оказывается размыт.
